William R. "Bill" Dieter Jr., 85, of Nisbet, passed away Sunday, April 28, 2019, at UPMC Susquehanna Williamsport, with his family by his side. He was preceded in death by his wife of 45 years, L. Kathleen (Everling) Dieter, on Oct. 5, 2001.
Born Dec. 2, 1933, in Williamsport, he was a son of the late William R. Sr. and Marion D. (Casson) Dieter.
Bill grew up in Hillsgrove and was a 1951 graduate of the former Loyalsock Joint High School in Estella. Following graduation he served in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War and later retired after 17 years from Frito Lay as a machine operator, where he continued to work part time until 2014.
Bill was a member of St. John's-Newberry United Methodist Church where he was active in the church men's group, and formerly active in the chancel choir and a Sunday school teacher's helper. He also was an active committee member of Boy Scout Troop 14, where he attended Boy Scout Summer Camp for the last 10 years, and received two mentor pins from Eagle Scouts. He was the past president of the Sullivan County Allumina Association, and he enjoyed swimming, going to the YMCA, motorcycles, cars and roller skating. Bill enjoyed life to the fullest and lived 85 years without compromise, while he always enjoyed doing things with and for others. Most of all Bill loved and cherished spending time with his family.
Surviving are his four daughters, Cynthia L. Rice (Mark), of Duboistown, L. Gale Dieter, of Harrisburg, Merriann K. Baker (James), of Cogan Station, and Danielle W. Dymeck (Steve), of Elimsport; 16 grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren; and a brother, John G. Dieter, of Muncy.
In addition to his wife and parents he was preceded in death by two sisters, Shirley A. Hultizer and Bertie A. Hoover.
A funeral service to honor the life of Bill will be held 5 p.m. Friday, May 3, at St. John's-Newberry United Methodist Church, 2101 Newberry St., Williamsport, with Rev. Lenore Hosier officiating. A viewing will be held from 4 until 4:45 p.m., at St. John's-Newberry United Methodist Church.
