Victor Schleich

Victor Schleich, 90, of Lock Haven, formerly of Highland Terrace, died Saturday, June 5, 2010 at the home of his daughter, Marty Winslow, surrounded by his loving family. Vic's wife of 57 years, the former Mary Lou Boland, died Aug. 10, 2001. Vic joined the Corning Fiber Box Company in 1956 where he worked for 12 years before joining Smurfit-Stone Container in 1975. He made the President's Sales Club every year while at Stone and retired at age 81 with 50 years as a salesman. Vic was a member of the Castanea United Methodist Church and a former member of the New Hope United Methodist Church. Vic participated in football & track at both Lincoln High School and at the University of Nebraska. In 1988 he was inducted into both the Lincoln Nebraska High School and the College Football Hall of Fame. In 1941 he played in the Rose Bowl where Nebraska lost to Stanford. He graduated with a B.S. in Physical Education and still holds records in shot put at the University of Nebraska. Vic was a veteran of the Navy during WWII. He was G.I. Second team All American in 1943 and 1944. He was also named Associated Press First Team All Midwestern G.I. in 1944. Vic was transferred to the Iowa City Pre-Flight where he continued to play football and met his future wife, Mary Lou. Vic was drafted by the Chicago Football Club and the Minnesota Vikings; he was not able to leave the Navy to play with either team. After the war he was drafted by the New York Yankee Football Club, a member of the former All American Football Conference. Vic played for New York for one year and then returned to Nebraska where he co-owned a Dr. Pepper franchise with his brother. Vic enjoyed playing racquet ball and mixed doubles in tennis. He participated in the PA Senior Olympic Games. He won first place in racquet ball and second place in men's tennis doubles. Vic also enjoyed gardening and cooking and walked about six miles a day. Born Apr. 26, 1920 in Montrose, CO, he was the son of Jacob and Anna Zittercoff Schleich. Surviving are six children, Victoria S. (Thomas) Cole of Greeneville, TN; Teresa L. of Pittsburgh; John D. (Teresa) of Cogan Station; Paul J. (Jeanne) of Berwick; Martha S. Winslow of Lock Haven and Laura S. (Stuart) Irwin of Pittsburgh; a sister, Hilma S. Bork of Lincoln, NE; eight grandchildren and six great grandchildren. Vic was predeceased by a son-in-law William W. Winslow, Jr. and nine brothers and sisters. A visitation for friends and family will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at Knight-Confer's, 1914 Memorial Ave. Burial in Wildwood Cemetery will be private at the convenience of the family. The family will provide the flowers and suggests contributions to the church, 23 East Brown Street, Lock Haven, PA 17745 or the St. Anthony's Center, 125 East Willow Street, Williamsport, PA 17701 or Susquehanna Hospice, 1001 Grampian Blvd., Williamsport.
