Ruth Ann Steppe, 73, passed away on Wednesday, May 28, 2025, at UPMC of Williamsport.
Born on December 24, 1951, in Newark, NJ, she was a daughter of the late Lewis and Edith (Werner) Schaeffer. She dedicated her life to nurturing and caring for others, both in her professional career and personal life. Ruth's journey as a Licensed Practical Nurse began at Monmouth Medical Center in New Jersey, and she continued to extend her healing touch at UPMC Hospital of Williamsport and Leaders Nursing and Rehabilitation. Ruth's caring nature and ability to connect with her patients left a lasting impact on the many lives she touched.
After a fulfilling career in nursing, she channeled her entrepreneurial spirit into owning and operating Manhattan's Bar and the Corner Store, both in Williamsport, where she continued to make a positive impact on the community, she held so dear.
Ruth was loved and cherished by many. She leaves behind her husband of 25 years, Robert J. Steppe, Jr.; children Michael Hamilton of Colonia, NJ; Rebecca Mae Guiser and Victoria Hamilton, both of Messena, NY; and Amanda Steppe Boring of Milton; grandchildren Ryan, Nicholas, Jason, Emily, Jack, Michael, Jr., Christopher, and Lily. Ruth is also survived by her siblings Ernie Schaeffer (Cynthia) of Atlantic Highlands, NJ, and Edith Vandermark of Myrtle Beach, SC; nieces Sarah Schaeffer of Atlantic Highlands, NJ and Robin Vandermark of Myrtle Beach, SC; nephew Thomas Vandermark of Myrtle Beach, SC; cousins Mark and Melissa Vinci of NJ, Robert Cooke, Patty Keda, and Kathy Keda all of Myrtle Beach, SC and many other relatives and friends.
Her interests reflected her personality – from her love of cats to her penchant for collecting antiques. Ruth had a flair for dressing to impress and occasionally enjoyed cooking. She was known for being a good listener and a guiding light to those around her. Her passion for life and her selfless nature were the threads that wove through every role she played, from nurse to business owner, from mother to community advocate.
Services will be held at the convenience of the family.
