Max L. Paulhamus

     Max L. Paulhamus, 94, of Linden, died peacefully at his family’s farm on Saturday, October 27, 2018 surrounded by his family and friends.

     Born May 28, 1924, at home in Linden, he was a son of the late Verus and Della (Roller) Paulhamus. Max was raised with two brothers, Donald and Clair Paulhamus, both who preceded him in death, and Stella Young, of Alabama. In 1947, he married the late Eleanor L. (Fox) Paulhamus, with whom he raised three children, Constance Best (Robert), James Paulhamus (Jerre), and Martin Paulhamus (Corinne). He is also survived by seven grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren, and 3 great-great grandchildren.

     Max was a fourth generation farmer and began farming as a young child on the same land his sons and grandsons still farm. In almost a century, he lived through many changes in both farming and everyday living. He enjoyed sharing stories of his childhood, walking to Steam Mill School and warming a potato for lunch in the furnace of the one-room schoolhouse, taking over the farm from his father and bringing advances to animal husbandry and farming, raising his family with Eleanor, building a dairy barn with his two sons, breeding Holstein cows and watching young calves grow, and planting and harvesting crops each year.

     Every day of his life, Max awoke before sunrise and played hymns on his mother’s piano or his harmonica before going to the barn to feed cows and hear the day’s work. Passersby’s often would see Max walking about the farmstead, one hand grasping his hand-made cane and the other offering a welcoming wave. If anyone stopped at the farm, you would likely hear him humming a tune while he fed cows or walked through the cornfields to review the harvest.

     Max’s sweet tune was a constant throughout his life that was more than just a song. He lived his life as an example of love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. Max thanked God for his life and believed that God’s grace and love were available to anyone who believed, even if believing was as simple as watching the sunrise and being thankful. He often commented, “You know, when I look back over the years, I lived a good life.” Anyone who knew Max would agree.

     Friends and neighbors are invited to celebrate Max’s life 11:30 a.m. Friday, November 2 at Knight-Confer Funeral Home 1914 Memorial Avenue, Williamsport with the Rev. Robert W. Regan officiating.  Burial will follow in State Road Cemetery. A viewing will be held from 10:30 a.m. until time of service at Knight-Confer Funeral Home.
