John Schon Obituary

John Arthur Schon, 83, of Cogan Station, passed away on Friday, December 22, 2023, at his home.

Born on September 15, 1940, in Williamsport, he was a son of the late John Jennings and Regina (Ulmer) Schon. John graduated from Williamsport High School in 1958 and attended Williamsport Technical Institute.

Before retirement, John and his two brothers were partners in Schon Brothers Builders, where he built many homes in his career. He and his brothers were business partners in Schon Brothers Hardware. Even in retirement, John worked hard. He enjoyed helping plant potatoes on Munro Farm, and driving the tractor on his brother’s farm to make hay.

He and his wife of 31 years, Melva (Courter) Schon loved traveling in their motorhome. Together they visited almost all 50 states, including their yearly trip to Florida, where they would camp from November to April. He also took his Slingshot for an occasional spin. Being a camping fanatic, John was a member of the Susquehanna Winnebago and Good Sam camping clubs.

If John was not traveling, he was volunteering his time to his community. He was a life member of the West Branch Susquehanna Builders Association, served 15 to 20 years as Hepburn Township Supervisor, was a member of the Lycoming County Agricultural Land and Preservation Board, and a member of the Hepburn Baptist Church.

Along with his loving wife, John was also survived by his former wife, Mary Ellen Hyde and three children, Christina Rogers (Christopher), Michael Schon (Ronda), and Matthew Schon (Louanne); five step-children, Bernardine Hess (Chris), Tina Myers, LeRoy Paulhamus (Glenna), Rodney Paulhamus (Karen), and Ronald Paulhamus (Sondra); two brothers, Cecil Schon (Fern) and Clyde Schon (Ruth); one sister, Thelma Houseknecht, and one sister-in-law, Kathy Schon. John also leaves behind to cherish his memory, 13 grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren with one due in March, and numerous nieces and nephews.

Along with his parents, John is preceded in death by his brother, Clair Schon.
