James L. "Jim" Bates, better known as "Chuggie", 72, of South Williamsport, passed away on Saturday, December 30, 2023, at Williamsport South Rehabilitation and Nursing Center.
Born January 24, 1951, in Williamsport, he was a son of the late Charles R. Bates Sr. and Frances J. (Raudabaugh) Bates.
Jim was a Williamsport Area High School graduate and retired from Stroehmann’s Bakery. He was a member of the American Legion Post 1, Williamsport, Bland J. Rossman VFW Post 1630, Lock Haven, and Sons of Italy Lodge 2786, Williamsport.
Jim enjoyed all things John Deere; he was a collector and restorer of several tractors. Most of all Jim loved his dog, Daisy.
Surviving are his four children, James Bates Jr., Jennifer Palmeter (Brad), Susan Dunn (Keith), and Michael Bates; several grandchildren; a brother, Timothy J. Bates (Cindy) of Laurens, Sc.; and close friends Dean C. Fulger (Pamela) of Lock Haven and Doris "Mammy G" Campbell.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Charles R. Bates Jr.
A funeral service to honor the life of Jim will be held 7 p.m. Thursday, January 4, at Knight-Confer Funeral Home 1914 Memorial Avenue, Williamsport with close friend the Rev. Matthew McKay officiating. A viewing will be held from 6 p.m. until time of service at Knight-Confer Funeral Home.
Burial will be held privately in Church of Brethren Cemetery, Eastville.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Jim’s name to the Lycoming County SPCA 2805 Reach Road Williamsport, PA 17701.
