Charles Smith Obituary

Charles E. “Chuck” Smith, 88, of Williamsport, passed away on Tuesday, January 14, 2025, at his home. Surviving is his loving wife of 48 years, Betty J. Long Smith.

Born April 21, 1936, in Reynoldsville, he was a son of the late Kenneth E. and Dorothy R. (Graham) Smith.

Chuck proudly served his country as a U.S. Marine. After his enlistment, he continued to show his patriotism by joining the local American Legion Posts in Williamsport and Montoursville. He was a member of the Marine Corp League Williamsport Detachment and served on the Lycoming County Veteran’s Council. Chuck gratefully dedicated his time as the originator of the Lycoming County Toys for Tots and was a former coordinator bringing Christmas cheer to the families of his community. Apart from his civil veteran duties, Chuck was also a member of the Williamsport Consistory, the Polish Club, and the Ivy Lodge #397 F. & A.M.

Chuck was a diligent worker. Prior to retirement, he owned and operated the former Midway Tire Company, and worked for about ten years in truck sales at Shirns. After retirement, he continued to transport trucks and buses.  A man of faith, he always knew his blessings were attributed from God. He was a member of St. Michael’s Lutheran Church.

Surviving in addition to his wife are three daughters, Gerri Randall of Dubois, Gayle Anderson (Tom) of Dubois, Gara Smith of FL; three daughters, Gail Stroble of Jersey Shore, Brenda Stebbins (Ray) of NY, and Kelly Sponhouse (Moe) of Williamsport; son, James Long (Jackie) of FL; a brother, Arthur P. Smith of Reynoldsville; 11 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and many loving nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, William E. Smith and Richard E. Smith, and a sister, E. Jane Town.

A funeral service to honor the life of Chuck will be 10 a.m. Saturday, January 18 at St. Michael's Lutheran Church 1877 St Michaels Rd, Cogan Station. Burial will follow in St. Michael’s Lutheran Church Cemetery with full military honors accorded by the Korean War Veterans of Lycoming County. 

A masonic service will be held 3:45 p.m. on Friday, January 17 at Knight-Confer Funeral Home, 1914 Memorial Avenue, Williamsport followed by a viewing from 4 – 6 p.m.
